Importance of Ergonomics & Wellness

Ergonomics is the practice of designing things that involves people – workspaces, sports and leisure, health and safety. It aims to improve workplaces and surroundings to minimize the risk of injury or harm. As lifestyles and technologies change, people need to ensure that they are using the appropriate tools & products designed for their bodies’ requirements may it be for work, leisure or any activity.

Wellness is a conscious, self-directed and evolving process of achieving full potential. Maintaining an optimal level of wellness is crucial to live a higher quality life, subdue stress, reduce the risk of illness and ensure positive interactions.

Promoting Ergo & Wellness in the Philippines

In the Workplace

The number of occupational injuries in the Philippines has been increasing since 2003. According to International Labor Organization (ILO), 17 of 18 persons in the nation’s workforce of 38.8 million do not benefit from acceptable working conditions.

Recent study has shown that lower back pain is the world’s most common work-related disability – affecting employees from offices, building sites and in the highest risk category, agriculture. Other injuries experienced by individuals include eye strain, cramps, work-related musculoskeletal diseases, migraine, neck problems, among many others, due to poorly-designed working tools and unacceptable working conditions.

Ergonomics aims to create safe, comfortable and productive workspaces by bringing human abilities and limitations into the design of a workspace, including the individual’s body size, strength, skill, speed, sensory abilities (vision, hearing), and even attitudes.

In the Greater Population

In the Philippines, the number of older people is increasing rapidly, faster than growth in the total population. According to Commission on Population, by year-end 2018 there will be over 8 million Filipinos over 60, constituting 8.2% of Filipinos. Most countries are considered aging if they have at least 7% of the population over 65 years old. With this, equipment, services and systems will need to be designed to accommodate the increasing needs of the ageing population, applying to public transport, building facilities, and living spaces.

As for the young population, time is of the essence, as the demand for school or work increases. With this, there is a need to invest in tools that are designed to make their work more efficient and less time consuming.
